It could be a case of too little, too late for Treyarch’s changes to the franchise. Black Ops 2 needs more innovation!
Call of Duty needs innovation, and it’s coming in Black Ops 2. Some analysts are not convinced, however
Yes, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is the most pre-ordered title in the franchise currently. But then, when isn’t a Call of Duty title? The test is to see how many people actually go out and buy the game at launch. With Halo 4 launching just a week before Black Ops 2, Treyarch has a big task to win over consumers who are bored of games recycling the same mechanics.
EEDAR’s Jesse Divinch dismissed some analysts’ concerns as a reaction to the downward trend of triple-A boxed titles. He said the entire HD market is weak at the moment, and said it’s no surprise retailers and publishers are taking a conservative approach to Black Ops 2 forecasts.
He also said he wouldn’t underestimate Activision given Call of Duty’s record-breaking history. If Black Ops 2 can be the most-sold Call of Duty title every alongside Halo 4, then that’s a fantastic achievement.
M2’s Billy Pidgeon said Black Ops 2 will continue to sell as there is now a larger install base of consoles. As Michael Pachter suggested in the Bonus Round, Microsoft could release a new Xbox 360 bundled with Kinect for a reduced price. That would drive sales in the build-up to Black Ops 2.
RW Baird’s Colin Sebastian disagreed though, saying ageing technology means blockbuster games don’t have as much appeal. He is forecasting Black Ops 2 will sell as many copies as Modern Warfare 2 in 2011, which would be the first step back for the franchise.
Pachter also said he doesn’t think Modern Warfare 3 willl sell more than the original Black Ops, so is doubtful of Black Ops 2 breaking records. He added Call of Duty is already selling 20 million at release, so it’s unrealistic to think that figure can continue to rise.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on November 13. Pre-orders are live now. The title is already outpacing Modern Warfare 3 – and pre-orders are three times as much as Black Ops.
