The Wii U Is, Apparently, A Next-Gen Console According to Gearbox: Aliens: Colonial Marines Runs Smoothly On It

Aliens: Colonial Marines looks its best on the Wii U.

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford said, again, the Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines is the best looking

Pitchford was talking about the game in an interview with GameSpot, simultaneously showing off gameplay and talking about the Wii U. The footage, to me, showed movement and aiming that looked a lot like Borderlands (that’s good).

Pitchford was keen to emphasize that Gearbox won’t exploit the license for money, and is aiming to develop a quality product. He said the advantage of video game is you aren’t confiened to a set period of time, so they can blend the intense and quiet moments. That means pacing should be good, because they aren’t forced to come to a resolution in a set period.

Narrative experience, alien vs marines

Pitchford added the game has an an awesome campaign built around story. He confirmed multiplayer, in the form of aliens vs. marines. What’s great about the mode is, as he said, the balance isn’t event. That doesn’t mean one side is more powerful, but the Aliens instill that sense of fear in my opinion. Pitchford added some games show the same enemies in multiplayer, whether human on human or Spartan vs Spartan.

There will also be a meta game, working across the campaign and multiplayer. Progression will be earned playing each, go players jumping into multiplayer aren’t disadvantaged. Pitchford described the Wii U controller as best Nintendo controller he’s ever seen, and cited an instance where the in-game leaderboards were shown on the controller and not on the screen. I must admit that checking team scores usually has to be done in a split-second instance.

On the touch screen, Pitchford also revealed more uses for the tablet to enhance the experience. For example, there’s a motion tracker with sound coming from the controller. Moving the controller around repositions the motion tracker’s waves.

Regarding multiplayer matchmaking for the Wii U, Pitchford didn’t reveal much information but suggested it’s supported. It’s needed if Nintendo are to be competitive with other platforms.

Aliens: Colonial Marines releases on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and the Wii U very, very soon, around Autumn, Pitchford teased, adding an announcement is imminent. Visit for more information.
