Much-anticipated 3DS-only 2D Mario revealed to be a sequel: Super Mario Bros. 2

New Super Mario Bros. 2 makes a return

New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mii and … 2? Yep, that’s the latest “New Super Mario Bros.” title to be announced for the Nintendo 3DS, along with a Kirby compilation and a minor 3DS firmware update.

The title was announced by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata at the Nintendo Direct conference. Not much has been revealed about the title, but the game will feature “loads of other favourite characters from the series” and a return to simple platforming found in the original New Super Mario Bros (though Super Mario 3D Land was pretty simple).

Screenshots were also released, showing Mario wearing the tanooki suit – which returned in Super Mario 3D Land – flying in the air temporarily with the run guage on the bottom of the screen. That’s like the meter in Super Mario Bros. 3, which I abused to fly across the top of maps to skip large sections. Perhaps we’ll see the return of past suits such as the Frog Suit. New suits were in Super Mario Galaxy.

The Kirby collection hasn’t been named, but has been confirmed to mark the 20th anniversary. The collection will include “fan-favourite” Kirby titles, and more anniversary plans are to be revealed later in the year. For Mario’s 25th anniversary, Nintendo released a compilation of games which were remastered in 16-bit and included a soundtrack. Hopefully we’ll see something a bit more inventive this time.

The firmware update for the 3DS was also announced, releasing on April 25. Folders can now be used on the Home Screen. The eShop will shows more title recommendations and improve visibility of titles available for users. As a possible sign of things to come in the Wii U, software patches have been introduced. The first title to use them will be Mario Kart 7, due to shortcut glitches on tracks, which is coming mid-May.

“A new Mario game and a big Kirby celebration will help make 2012 an especially great for Nintendo fans,” Scott Miffot, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is will release August in North America and Japan.
