Hideo Kojima confirmed the fifth entry in the stealth series is a prequel to a unnamed entry in the Metal Gear/Metal Gear Solid series, and the game is running on hardware comparable to current-generation HD consoles.
Hideo Kojima says the FOX Engine will work on current-generation console
The reveal of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is exciting because we’re playing as Snake in an open-world setting and not a faux-linear world, where you’re guided to different environments. Aside from calling helicopters in to navigate around the world, Kojima confirmed that the title runs on hardware comparable to current-generation consoles.
He said comparable because Ground Zeroes actually ran on a PC, though the hardware was similar to a PlayStation 3 according to Hideo Kojima. The cutscenes are real-time and in-engine, so the experience shown in the demo (below) should be the experience we get on consoles. Though like Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs gameplay demo, the game looks beyond anything we’ve seen on current-generation HD consoles.
Kojima also confirmed during the announcement he is returning in his role as producer to work directly on Ground Zeroes. Perhaps that’s due to the open-world approach to MGS; either way it’s exciting to see what kind of approach he brings to the title. I don’t think another Metal Gear Solid title in the vein of the Metal Gear Solid series thus far would have been a great move.
Too Good To Be True
As mentioned the game is a prequel. We don’t know to what title, though it is confirmed the game focuses on Snake. Metal Gear Solid 3 follows the original Snake, Big Boss, so we’re going to be playing before Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 4, or maybe even before a Metal Gear title. Snake look considerable younger than his older self in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots, so at this stage a time period around MGS2 seems like a sensible guess.
However, Kojima did say he wanted to use the FOX engine to present a contrast to older titles like Metal Gear Solid 1. So perhaps we’ll see a prequel to that title, or even the Metal Gear series.
Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is to be announced. Platforms are also to be confirmed, though current-generation consoles are confirmed.
