Sonic 4: Episode II is coming between May and June. Watch trailer below.
The second episode in the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 saga releases this May with free content
Finally, we have a release date data for Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II after seeing plenty of recorded footage from trade shows earlier this year.
The trailer shows off new enemy types, with some kind of sand worm-esque robot appearing around Sonic and Tails. What’s also interesting about the level is, aside from its mechanical/desert theme, the oil slides from Sonic 2’s Oil Ocean Zone return (once you step on them, you can’t run back up).
We also get to see the co-op action again, with Sonic and Tails able to go into a ball form to destroy enemies and move quickly. Tails can also fly Sonic around, getting access to higher routes. An area in the trailer seems to specifically require players to perform the co-op move, avoid rotating beams of fire. Tails can also be used in the flying mode to destroy blocks, by flying upwards and into them.
There’s also a section where the sand is rising, like in Sonic 3’s Sandopolis Zone. The downside to this is that, in Sonic 3, players had to use platforming to not get crushed. In the Sonic 4 trailer, springs seem to automatically get players to safety.
The title releases May 15 and 16 for PSN and XBLA respectively. In “May” – there’s no specific release date – also for PC and iOS devices. June and July are for the Android and Windows Phone 7 devices
There is also a bonus with Episode II if players purchased Episode I: players unlock the ability to player as Metal Sonic, for free, in “Episode Metal.” There are four unique levels to play through as Metal Sonic, and the episode promises to explore how Metal Sonic was reborn after being destroyed in Sonic CD.
It also appears that the returning stage Ken Balough talked about is Stardust Speedway, from Sonic CD. That’s the stage where Metal Sonic was originally fought, so it’s no surprise we’ll be returning there. Perhaps Metal Sonic will be a boss on that stage towards the end of the game, though that would be fairly uninspired.
