Indie Game Of The Week #5: Starpoint Gemini 2
Looking for a new sandbox game but you’re a little bored of classic RPG’s? Then pay attention now. Starpoint Gemini 2 is setting out to become the new ultimate sandbox space sim.
About The Game
Starpoint Gemini 2 mixes RPG and space sim in a great, exciting way. If you liked Freelancer, you will find yourself right at home, it offers everything you know from the classic game: Factions, trading, pirates, ship tuning and so much more than I could list right now.
It really impressed me how the developers (Little Green Men Games) created a sandbox world that is as much fun to explore as Elder Scroll’s vast empire of Tamriel.
Exploration: Wormholes, T-Gates, Riftways
Travelling around is slow at times (it’s a huge universe!) but that is part of the excitement, because you can be robbed or attacked at any time during cargo runs. Missions are generated randomly based on your current factions and you end up gettings lots of missions just by cruising around the universe in your starship.
Dynamic Battles And Over 70 Ships
The game features over 70 ships which you can fully tune and upgrade with all sorts of weapons.
Unlike other space sims, the battles are actually dynamic and you have to actually pursue your enemies to shoot them down. This is definitely a very appealing advantage over other strategy-only space sims.
Skills and Perks
As mentioned, this is more than just a space sim, it comes with all sorts of RPG elements like various skills and perks you can level up
The skills obviously depend on your class. Right now there are 3 classes you can choose from, all suited for different playstyles like commanding spaceships, hacking other ships or repairing them.
Free Roaming Mode vs. Story Mode
As of right now, there is only a free roaming mode, but the game is in “Early Access” and a full story mode will be added later on. But even without the story, this already feels like a really decent game with lots to do and explore.
