In October, Halo 4’s launch will be preceded by a live action mini-series called Forward Unto Dawn. It will set up the Human-Covenant conflict across five 15-minute episodes.
We’re not getting a Halo movie, but something that’s pretty close in length and style in Forward Unto Dawn
Peter Jackson’s directing a Halo movie? That was once close to becoming a reality, if it wasn’t for those dastardly Microsoft executives bringing in Spartans to Hollywood and doing things their way. Still, years later, with Halo 4 developers 343 Industries at the steering wheel of one of gaming’s most respected franchises, the Forward Unto Dawn live action series is appeasing the disappointed majority as we get to see how the Human-Covenant war began.
As I mentioned above, each episode will be 15 minutes in five installments meaning we’ll get a a mini movie length of around 90 minutes. More scenes are available in the Halo 4 Limited Edition for $99, and a preview of FUD could happen this Thursday at San Diego Comic-Con. The series will be available digitally and physically.
Frank O’Connor, franchise development director at 343 Industries, said Dawn definitely scratches the itch for fans who have wanted to see live action Halo. This isn’t the first time, of course: Halo 3, ODST and Reach have had live action installments. How could you forget the epic Believe trailer that built up to the Halo 3 launch?
Real People, Real Production
Actors include Daniel Cudmore as Master Chief, who has starred in Twilight, with Stewart Handley directing the series who created horror movie Soronity Row. I’ve loved the live action series’ because I’m attached to Halo in the same way I love Sonic the Hedgehog, but the costumes haven’t look completely authentic. Something’s been off, but the new images of Chief made his armor look real and intimidating. It’s easy to forget this is a 7-inch Spartan that’s fought an entire race of aliens, and a parasite that feeds on everything that moves.
Ubisoft is entering into live action with Assassin’s Creed 3 and Michael Fassbender, or Prometheus, directing. O’Connor said the writers have been working very closely with 343 Industries, essential for authenticity.
Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn begins in October. Halo 4 releases November 6.
