MobileDemand has just released the xTablet T1200 – a fully rugged tablet PC that runs on Windows 8 and is the first of its kind.
MobileDemand Unveils First Fully Rugged Windows 8 Tablet PC
The MobileDemand xTablet T1200 is the first fully rugged Windows 8 PC to hit the market. It is a ruggedized tablet that meets military specifications for those out there in the field and want to use Windows 8.
This is not your regular Ultrabook convertible but then it is meant for those who are really out there in the field and an iPad or consumer grade Ultrabook simply won’t cut it.
The xTablet T1200 is the first Windows 8 tablet made by MobileDemand, a company that is known for making ruggedized devices. This tablet comes with a 10.4inch display and the latest Intel third generation processors along with an option to push the memory up to 16GB. As for the OS, you can either choose Windows 8, which it was designed for, or go for Windows 7 Professional if you have compatibility issues with Windows 8. However, if you don’t have compatibility issues with Windows 8, it will be a much better experience than Windows 7 can ever give you.
In fact, Windows 8 tablets are being absorbed faster by professionals than any other form factors. It is mainly because Windows 8 is very well suited as a transforming platform that allows traditional as well as modern touch based use case scenarios. The storage option in this tablet starts from a 64GB SSD to a 256GB SSD. And if you want more, you can add a separate hard disk drive to increase the storage capacity while the OS and the main apps run off the SSD, giving you a much faster experience.
Since it is designed with field professionals in mind, it comes with an RFID reader and barcode scanner built right in. There’s a rear-facing 5MP primary camera and also a front facing secondary camera for video chatting. As expected, it has a wide range of connectivity options – GPS, PCMCIA, 2x USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, serial port, SDHC card reader and there’s an option for Bluetooth 4.0, 3G and 4G LTE.
It comes with a three year warranty and has a MIL-STD 810G rating for its ruggedized build. This means you can safely drop it when using standing up and still expect nothing to happen to it. It has an IP65 rating for protection against dust and rain. And if you enjoy seeing tablets getting punished (we don’t judge), you can take a look at the video below.
MobileDemand is a niche company that serves to a specific category of PC users. They have a range of accessories for teaming up with their rugged devices. The xTablet T1200 does not have any accessories specifically made for it but the company says there are some on their way. These accessories for the T1200 include -Êcarrying options, docking options, power and battery and also office accessories.
This much ruggedness is hard to find in the consumer market, so it is not a surprise that this is the first fully ruggedized Windows 8 tablet that we have come across. If you work in extreme environments where you still need to use a PC, using devices like this one is your only option. With Windows 8, you will get the best of both desktop and tablet features along with full usability thanks to the Intel processors. However, all of this ruggedness does come with its hefty price tag.
If you are planning to go for the basic model, you will be set back by $3,000 and then come in the upgrades and accessories, which can push you well over $4000. MobileDemand seems to be aware of its niche nature. They have started a limited run of the device with immediate availability. Full scale availability is scheduled for January 2013.
