Max Payne 3’s multiplayer sets to be everything GTA IV wasn’t, threatening to be a hit this May

Max Payne 3 Multiplayer Gameplay Screens

Earlier this month we had details on the narrative in Max Payne 3. This time, Rockstar shows off the features in May Payne 3’s multiplayer and what we can expect when the title releases this May.

In part one of the “multiplayer gameplay” preview, Max Payne 3 is confirmed to have Bullet Time – the signature ability to slow down time – and the ability to play as multiple characters. Game modes like Gang Wars and Painkillers are tie into the game.

Of course the the multiplayer is in third person, “allowing players to connect with the charatcer they can see” while retaining “full fluid control” during gunplay.

Bullet Time, when activated, comes over from the single player and allows players to slow down time and dodge bullets. To solve the “development challenge” that Rockstar had when bringing the feature over, Rockstar have only allowed Bullet Time to work when players are in “your line of sight” will enter Bullet Time. The ability is a described as a ‘burst,’ and more will be revealed soon according to the preview.

Multiplayer modes

Described as the “marquee mode,” it features factions from the single player and feature and ongoing narrative and players progress through games.

Payne Killer forces players to work together as they attempt to to kill Max Payne himself, and his partner Raul Pasos. Killing either gains players control of the character. The aim? To stay alive. The characters have plenty of ammo, and painkillers, which presumably means more health and resistance to damage, so are difficult to take down.

The movement looks to be considerably improved from GTA IV, which felt restricted in its movement. Movement speed looks quick, players are seen vaulting over structures and aiming looks simple. Everything GTA IV, and even Red Dead Redemption, weren’t.

The only question right now from fans is whether the Bullet Time ability can be abused from behind, as players can activate it when others are in their “line of sight.”

Max Payne 3 releases May 18. A Special Edition is available for pre-order now until April 2.
