Finally – Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 trailer – Old Faces, New Setting

The Black Ops 2 reveal trailer paints a dark picture in the near future, but it’s not a surprise.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 looks to be the first title since Modern Warfare to bring a new setting and new weapons

Set in 2025, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is the first title since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to take to the series into a new setting and attempting to bring fresh ideas to the franchise. This is to be applauded, as a new setting and new features are long overdue.

The trailer begins by showing Frank Woods, who featured in Black Ops which finished in 1968, as his much older self. He is lamenting the technologies advances and the war happening in the near future, but says he isn’t surprised.

A couple of new robots are shown: this game’s version of the UAV, which includes four rotating blades, and a walking mech similar to something seen in Trenched (only smaller). Players can also fly the UAV-esque device, which also has a machine gun. Whether that’s a premium perk in the multiplayer is unknown, but I hope so because that would quickly be abused.

The trailer shows off what’s likely the Los Angeles setting, burning presumably because of the ongoing fighting. Futuristic jets are flying towards buildings, which are on fire like in the trailer thumbnail, in a small fleet. Jets are also flyable, though look to be in tighter spaces compared to those in Battlefield.

Militants uprising?

Moving away from the city, there could be some sort of uprising from a desert setting as a group of people (fighters, militants?) are shown cheering.

We also see Alex Mason’s son, David, involved in or leading a squad. The trailer climaxes by showing more of the city being destroyed, and Alex on his knees as he narrowly avoids a destroyed car flying past him while a jet looks to be chasing him. Returning to the desert, characters are seen escaping or chasing on horses which reminds me of the bike scene in Black Ops where you’re escaping from enemies and chasing a train.

The trailer finishes by saying The Future is Black, and confirmed the rumored November 13, 2012 release date. Head to for more information.
