Assassin’s Creed 3 creative director says female protagonist would “feel kind of wrong” in American Revolution

The creative director of Assassin’s Creed 3 – Alex Hutchinson – says that a female lead character in the upcoming title would ‘feel wrong.’

In an interview with Kotaku, Hutchinson says that they “wanted a character who is more earnest.” Comparing Connor Ratohnhake:ton to Ezio Auditore, he described the latter as more of a “womaniser.”

Connor has been confirmed to be Native American and a member of the North American tribe. Connor feels drawn to the assassins, though it’s not explicitly been revealed why.

“We didn’t want you to be a Patriot. We didn’t want you to be a Redcoat.” The team wanted a Native American because the character would be “outside the conflict.”

In order to create the most authentic experience, the team sought out a Native American actor, and wanted to be “historically accurate.” Hutchinson went on to say that the team are creating a character who is part of an oppressed people. Ezio was easier to create, as Italians had a well-functioning society, and had wealth.

Hutchinson is also keen to point out that they didn’t want to create something who was incredibly patriotic, or “jingoistic” as Kotaku puts its. This is because the team want Connor to feel like an outsider, and want him to feel like an “agent” who fights for anyone. Creating someone who was American, or British, would have removed that freedom.

“They [Native Americans] were not feeling the true oppression, but they were still being abused,” Hutchinson added. He want to say that Connor’s people didn’t fight everything, so by extension Connor won’t either. That should also play into Connor being an assassin: it’s down to players whether they want to avoid enemies or kill them.

The end result is that Connor seems widely different than Ezio or Auditore, with more of a mysterious persona about him. Ezio charged ahead, killing enemies left and right while travelling between cities. A great variety of environments should enhance the stealth gameplay, along with additions such as hanging enemies from branches.

Increased moveset

We also reported that Connor will have a greater moveset than his predecessors, being able to climb trees and dual wield.
