The next entry in the BioShock franchise is confirmed for release October 16
BioShock Infinite is coming October 16 for North America, and October 19 elsewhere
BioShock Infinite has finally received a confirmed release date: October.
More specifically, the game will release October 16 in North America and October 19 in the rest of the world. Ken Levine, Creative Director at Irrational Games, said the team “had a vision for the follow up that dwarfed the original in scope and ambition.” Levine also revealed that the game has been in development for four years, having been shown off at last year’s E3.
BioShock Infinite revolves around Booker DeWitt, along with his companion Elizabeth. The game is set in 1912 in Columbia, America as the two try to escape.
1999 Mode revealed
The team at Irrational Games also revealed a new ‘hardcore’ more for BioShock Infinite, called 1999 Mode. The game mode is based around planning, forcing players to plan ahead in ways such as thinking about where to specialize so weapons found throughout the game can be used. The choices players make also have “irreversible” implications on their experience, good or bad.
Shortly after the announcement the team also asked fans to send in questions about 1999 Mode to Game Designer on BioShock Infinite, Bill Gardner. Here are their responses.
Question: Is 1999 Mode available from day one?
Answer: Gardner says that players don’t have to complete the game to unlock 1999 Mode but, because the mode is quite difficult, they don’t want players to stumble into it. Therefore, they may include some way of unlocking the mode.
Q: Will the mode have fixed save points, or an unlimited number of saves?
A: The save system will not be changed.
Q: How will enemies change through the increased difficult in 1999 Mode?
A: Enemies won’t behave differently, but health and accuracy will be modified. Gardner also says that the fact that resources are scarce, and that players only use the weapons they have specialised in, make enemies feel tougher.
Q: How do the permanent player modifications work in 1999 Mode?
A: Gardner says that players make choices and live with them – it will be very hard, or impossible, to change those decisions.
BioShock Infinite is releasing on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
