Microsoft announced that its Xbox 360 video game and entertainment console has retained its number-one spot in the U.S. for an 18th consecutive months, despite the summer being a slow period for releases. Imagine what it’ll sell during November.
An impending ban on Xbox 360s? No worries, we’re still selling consoles, says Microsoft
Microsoft has revealed that its Xbox 360 gaming console has sold the most units out of the three current-generation gaming consoles, in the U.S., for the 18th month. It sold over 200,000 units during Q2 2012, but saw a year-on-year decrease in sales.
Microsoft controlled 47 percent of the console market in the States, and sold 257,000 Xbox 360 consoles during June 2012. Total retail spend was $272 million dollars for hardware, sofware and accessories. The most of any console in the United States, despite software releases being slow during most of Q3, until September.
Also, four of the top 10 games during the period were on Xbox 360: Ghost Recon: Future Solider, Max Payne 3, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, and NBA 2K12.
Microsoft said the Xbox continues to offer more ways to play through Kinect PlayFit, a fitness app available on the Xbox Live dashboard for tracking calories. Microsoft also cited Kinect games that performed well, including Dance Central 2 and the much-maligned Kinect Star Wars.
Chief financial officer at Microsoft, Peter Klein, also revealed to GamesBeat that 1.1 million consoles were sold during the second quarter of 2012 and Xbox Live membership grew by 15 percent. Even though Klein didn’t revealed this information, year-over-year sales are down by 39 percent during Q2 2012.
Colin Sebastian, a Robert W. Baird & Co. analyst, said to GamesBeat that a price cut for Microsoft’s console would help to increase hardware sales. The next-generation Xbox is expected to be announced next year, ahead of a possible late 2013/early 2014 launch. Microsoft didn’t cut the price of the Halo 4 Limited Edition Xbox 360 bundle: it’s $399.99, though it does work out as good value rather than buying the contents separately. Of course, you can buy the $99 Xbox 360 where the cost is spread over two years.
Roll on November, when sales will explode, think Microsoft.
