The latest Windows 8 build, supposedly Windows 8 M3, still makes use of the old-fashioned product keys.

But the new genuine center could bring a stop to pirated copies of Windows 8. If this will really be implemented it will generate in higher sales of Windows 8 and that again will result in more support for Windows 8 and lots more features! Legit people can only win, it’s a win-win situation. Crackers will probably still find a way to create pirated copies, but they won’t be able to receive any updates.

Once the genuine center detects that you use a banned Windows 8 product key it will deactivate your copy of Windows 8 and you can either buy a new product key directly from Microsoft or enter a new legit key manually.
