Windows 7 on Tablets: Market Share 5% – Is Windows 8 Going for 30%?
Yes, there’s still no Windows 8 tablet. But it’s coming in 2012. With Windows 8 being one of the biggest gambles of Microsoft ever, what market share are they going for? 30%, 40% or even 50%? (Apple currently holds 60%, Google 30%)
According to Strategy Analytics 15 million tablets were sold in Q2 2011, 9.3 million Apple tablets. A market share of over 60%!
Google has quite an impressive following. Their market share: A very impressive 30.1%. For a tablet that is not as actively marketed as the Apple iPad that is quite a number.
Windows 8 Tablet Design and Hardware: A Solid Basis for a Windows 8 tablet
As far as we can tell, a lot of people really like the Windows 8 Metro UI that will also be used on Windows 8 tablets. A solid basis for the success of a tablet is of course the design, but the hardware is also very important. Microsoft teamed up with lots of hardware manufacturers to make sure there will be plenty of different models including HP, Lenovo, Asus, Dell, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony.
Marketing A Solid Product
Aside from a solid product, Microsoft needs to actively market their product. Many people criticized the quality of their “I am a PC” campaign, but nonetheless it was quite successful. Windows 7 is the best selling OS in history.
If everything goes well, who say’s Microsoft can’t snag up to 50% of the market share. A market dominated by Apple and Google. Even if you are pessimistic, it will be tough for Apple and Google to keep their market dominance.
Predicted Market Share Of Windows 8 Tablet
My prediction is that Microsoft will be able to snag at least 30% of the market share 6 months after the introduction of Windows 8. There is enough consumer demand and room for a healthy competition between Apple, Google and Microsoft.
