Desktop Themes Are Stored In …

  • C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes
  • C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

Why Are There Two Folders For Windows 7 Themes?

Windows 7 introduced a theme format called themepack. All themepack Windows 7 desktop themes are stored in C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes

If you can’t see the folder, you might want to read our tutorial how to get access to AppData.

The second folder C:\Windows\Resources\Themes is the actual folder where the “real” desktop themes are stored in Windows 7. If you want to install Windows 7 themes (custom themes), then you need to copy the files in there. Our Windows 7 Mac Theme is also a custom theme that needs to be copied into this folder.

Tip: Before You Can Install Custom 3rd-party Windows 7 Themes You NEED…

Before you even consider installing custom 3rd-party themes, you need to patch some Windows 7 files, because by default you can’t install themes.
