Play the video again, the officer said, so we are with Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn

The Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn series doesn’t focus on Master Chief; instead, it focuses on the cadets. That was certainly the focus of the teaser trailer, and it didn’t paint the brightest of pictures.

The trailer opens with an officer of some kind instructing the cadets on a pincer movement, probably before the Covenant invasion. When the cadets are actually applying the movement, however, mutiny ensues and a cadet ignores orders and runs forward only to get killed.

Then there’s the cadets being injected with … something, probably a muscle enhancement of some kind, with the officer saying that many cadets hate the camp when they arrive. We then see cadets brawling in the canteen, with Thomas – the protagonist – certainly not being the soldier the officers think he is. There’s even a suggestion he might leave.

One Spartan, Plenty Of Cadets, Lots Of Explosions

Alarms sound, as the base is under attack from the Covenant – Forward Unto Dawn details the Human-Covenant war – with the building exploding and a cadet calling for a medic. Then, the fan service: Master Chief, as his younger self and non-Steve Downes (Chief is around the age of 40 during the Halo games, so approximately 20 during FUD). We saw the soldiers bruised, bloodied, Chief taking down Insurrectionists – not the Covenant, as far as we know – with an assault rifle as usual and him manning the machine gun on a Warthog. There even seems to be a cameo from Cortana calling for evac, but it was hard to tell.

The director speaking to Machinima said the war against the insurrectionists hasn’t been explored within the games, so those who haven’t read the novels will get a crash course on that section of the Halo fiction.

October 5, 2012 is when the first 15-minute episode will air and will run for about 90 minute. Extra scenes are included in the Halo 4 Limited Edition. Halo 4 launches November 5, so this series will probably build up to the launch with one episode a week.
