The Darksiders 2 for Wii U release seems to the latest game for the console setting the trend of including DLC on-disc.
DLC content could convince gamers to play Wii U ports again
Darksiders 2 is developed by Vigil Games; the August 2012 title includes Argu’s Tomb, new dungeons, and other content. The GamePad for Wii U allows the inventory to be managed, seemingly the go-to functionality for launch window games. The functionality of GamePad will probably be expanded as Wii U grows older, like Wii. Wangling Wii Remote with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess wasn’t the kind of immersive controls Wii pushed.
Darksiders 2 expands the world of Darksiders; dungeons are the size of the original Darksiders. The game also brings a focus on collecting loot and managing higher statistics.
Darksiders 2 isn’t the only game to introduce bonus DLC, or the first. Mass Effect 3 Wii U is including the downloadable content multiplayer packs, and perhaps the bonus single-player content the development team talked about. Whether Wii U will prove a competitive multiplayer platform is another issue though. Sections of consumers will associate Nintendo with casual gaming; it will take a big effort to remove the stigma. The introduction of Steam’s Big Picture Mode means controller-using players will be more attracted to PC gaming, rather than the complicated and finger-stretching keyboard layout.
Nintendo is hoping third-party titles will bring a wider audience to the next-generation console. The company traditionally relies on its first-party release to generate sales. For example, Mario Kart Wii shipped 30 million copies. Third-party exclusives will be needed, though, like the vitriol-inducing Bayonetta 2, to be released in the future. Bayonetta 2 may not see mass sales, but appealing to different niches is how Nintendo will bring in a large overall amount of gamers.
Wii U launches Nov. 18 in the U.S., and Nov. 30 in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Prices for New Zealand were revealed to be considerably higher than the U.S.
