Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm Requires Wings Of Liberty Copy

Blizzard lets out a storm of details about Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm.

Starcraft 2 heart of the swarm

May 31st big day for Heart of the Swarm

After remaining tightlipped about its second expansion of Starcraft II, Blizzard finally released details about Heart of Swarm on May 31st rounding off the end of the month with exciting news for gamers. Proclaimed the official sequel to the timed Wings of Liberty Starcraft II game, the announcement brought with it a new teaser trailer as well that was leaked onto the YouTube platform at the same time that quickly started making its rounds on the internet.

Leak of video not claimed by Blizzard

Blizzard has kept pretty quiet about where the leak came from, but the rumors around the internet point to GameTrailers where the video first appeared before it made it onto YouTube and really started to make waves. Even if the gaming giant did not authorize the leak, it quickly used it to its advantage as it posted it the next day on a website devoted specifically to Heart of the Swarm alongside a new gameplay video and plenty of screenshots that showed fans a bit more of what the game will really entail.

WOL required to play

Disappointing enough to some gamers, and exciting to others perhaps, Blizzard also shocked fans by announcing that in order to actually play Heart of Swarm gamers will also have to have a purchased copy of WoL. The news that the expansion will not be a standalone has some questioning if the video game is going to have its own merits, but Blizzard announced later that regions that do not have standard box models will still be able to play via other means. This of course leads to the question, why impose this restriction to the game play at all, and what exactly are they attempting to do with the tight correlation?

Key features of Heart of Swarm: New Units, New Plotline

As part of the announcement, what is known is that there will be some more new units included in the game and some new plotlines that will focus more on single players. In fact, Blizzard pointed out that the game will be focused solely on single players and while there may be multiplayer units introduced, at the moment it is not known for sure that they will exist at all.

Release Date: Unknown but expected 2012
