Steve Lycett, producer on Sega and All-Stars Racing Transformed developed by Sumo Digital, spoke to Official Nintendo Magazine recently and described the internal hardware of Wii U as surprising. The power of Nintendo’s next-generation console is a subject of much discussion, so hopefully people will shut up for now.
Wii U is comparable to current HD console according to the project lead on Sega and All-Stars Racing Transofmred
We have no idea whether Wii U blows away the competition in terms of graphical horsepower, and to be honest I really couldn’t care. Look at the Wii and you’ll realize a supposedly underpowered machine can deliver games, like Super Mario Galaxy 2, that compare to HD releases. Ranting aside, producer on Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing described the performance of Wii U as surprising.
Lycett said to Official Nintendo Magazine that there are unexpected and surprising challenges when developing for a new console, and that surprise with Wii U was the console’s GPU. Lycett admitted the development team was worried shaders and effects would have to be re-engineered, though that wasn’t the case.
Lycett also said in the interview the console has more memory than current consoles, seemingly, meaning there is less compression on artifacts and textures. His comments suggested the Wii U versions look better than PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, at least.
Building Better Games
It’s a positive moment for Nintendo. The company is trying to get third-party developers on board, and that’s partly going to be easier if the Wii U compares (at least) with current-generation consoles. Games looking and performing better on the Wii U will make gamers think about the platform to buy games on. Unless you’re gaming on a PC.
Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed is the sequel to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Sega’s kart racer seen as a rival to Mario Kart. The original game isn’t radically different to Mario Kart, though Transformed bases races around three vehicle types — cars, boats, and planes — that alter depending on the environment. In Mario Kart 7, you drive underwater with almost identical physics in cars. You fly, with almost identical physics, in cars. Transformed uses a different set of physics per vehicles.
Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed releases 2012 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U.
