Nokia Introduces Lumia Windows Phone 7 Smartphones At Nokia world

The Nokia World conference convention started on Wednesday this week. The company took this opportunity to introduce the first two smartphones running Windows Phone 7 Series from the company — the high end Lumia 800 (priced at ~$584) and the midrange Lumia 710 (priced at ~$377).

Both of these phones will be available in six European countries next month and in parts of Asia later this year. Plans for the US are afoot and the company plans to release devices in to that market early next year. This divide comes from the fact that Nokia has a stronger presence in Asia, followed by Europe and much less in the US. Also, the network standards used in the US are different from those used in Europe and Asia. Hence, it also likely made sense from a manufacturing point of view.

The Lumia 800 And The Lumia 710: “The First Real Windows Phone(s)” — Elop

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop spoke at that launch event to over 3,000 attendees and said that the Lumia was the “first real Windows phone”; highlighting the fact that they collaborated closely with Microsoft in order to create them both.

The Lumia 800 is designed after the Nokia N9 smartphone — a model that had to be abandoned after a failed collaboration with Intel. This new model will be a proper showcasing of the Windows Phone 7 platform and will provide both Nokia and Windows Phone a major boost in the market right before the holiday season kicks in.

The Lumia 800 has a 3.7inch 800×480 AMOLED display, a 1.4Ghz processor, 16GB internal storage and a 8MP camera. It is a flat screen device and is available in black, cyan and magenta.

The Lumia 710 also has the 3.7inch display and the 1.4GHz processor but it only has 8GB of storage and a 5MP camera. It is available in black and white and has interchangeable back covers that come in a variety of colors. Both devices are running Windows Phone 7 Series version 7.5 (Mango).
