Proximity in Windows 8 supports near-field communication between two computers using a tap-gesture. Proximity supports establishing a connection between peer applications on a separate computer with a tap and publishing messages when subscribers are within a close range. Near-field Communication or NFC is a set of computer standards for computers and smart phones to establish radio communication with each other by bringing them close together not more than a few centimeters. It works even if your device is switched off.
