As of right now it looks like Valve is creating a DotA successor, Dota 2, which will be very similar to Defense of the Ancients, which is basically the reason why there is a League of Legends today.
Trivia: Some dedicated DotA fans founded Riot Games to develop League of Legends because they were so convinced of the DotA gameplay. Looks like they were right!
