ITG’s xpPhone 2 Will Put The Windows 8 Desktop On A Phone
ITG is known for making the xpPhone — a phone that runs Windows XP — and now the company intends to release a similar product running Windows 8.
xpPhone 2 From ITG Brings 18 Hours Of Talk time And Runs Windows 8 Desktop
ITG’s original xpPhone is actually a small computer that ran Windows XP on a smartphone-sized device. It can make phone calls but it runs a full-fledged desktop operating system. Since the Windows XP UI was not designed for such a design, the phone did not find that much market penetration.
Earlier this week, the company announced the follow up to their xpPhone. Called xpPhone 2, this pocket-sized device will be running on Windows 8. Since Windows 8 is designed to be ‘touch-first’ and also has the Metro UI, the interface issue will hopefully be solved in this version.
xpPhone 2 will run on a 1.6GHz processor, the company said, and it will come with 2GB of RAM and up to 112GB of storage. ITG did not specify which processor they would be using. However, since they are aiming to run the Windows 8 desktop, it is mostly likely to be x86 and Intel. ARM-based processors won’t allow the phone to run the classic desktop side of Windows 8.
Other than the specs that read mostly like an average netbook, ITG also promises a large battery capacity that will apparently allow for 18.5 hours of talk time on one charge.
xpPhone 2 Will have A 4.3 Inch Display
ITG has announced that the phone would have a 4.3inch display and the whole device would measure 140 x 73 x 17.5 mm. Given the amount of battery power this device would consume to live up to the specs provided by the company, most of that volume would have to be made up of battery. Overall, given how the phone is being built, it is going to be more like a small tablet that can also make calls instead of an actual Windows 8 Phone.
