HTC Making Quad-Core Windows 8 Tablet

HTC CEO Peter Chou gave out information earlier this week about the company’s plans to make a quad-core Windows 8 tablet using a system-on-a-chip from NVIDIA.

NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 Quad-Core Processor To Power HTC Windows 8 Tablet

HTC chief Peter Chou had already hinted earlier this month that HTC is looking into Windows 8 tablets. Now he has confirmed a Windows 8 Tablet from the company for an early 2012 debut. Speaking during an interview, he said that the table would be using NVIDIA’s newly launched Tegra 3 Quad-Core ARM based SoC (System on a Chip).

The tablet will apparently be displayed at the 2012 World Mobile Congress (to be held in February as per its usual schedule). It will go on sale later in 2012 when Windows 8 itself will see a commercial launch.

HTC’s Windows 8 Tablet Will Stand Out From The Rest

According to Chou’s earlier comment, HTC’s tablet won’t be yet another me-too tablet. It will be designed in a way that stands out from the many other Windows 8 tablets that are scheduled for release around the same time. This time he reiterated that point. However, other than talking about the Tegra 3 being the heart of the system and the release time frame for late 2012, he did not supply any other detail.

This leaves lots of room for speculation as to how HTC plans to separate this tablet from the rest. Tegra 3 won’t be exclusive to their tablet. Asus has already announced that it would be available in one of their tablets by the end of the year, which is quite soon.

Given the amount of processing power Tegra 3 will afford the tablet, HTC might be adding some of its own custom made parts to Windows 8 to make it a better product. Just like their polished and popular Sense UI for Android separates them from the rest of the Android crowd. However, Windows 8 won’t allow for such skinning, so it might be special hardware features or special apps from HTC.
