How to Use Jailbreakme on iPod Touch
Apple software is designed to protect against security risks by limiting what can be used on their systems. Though the safety of Apple devices is ideal for many people, some would like access to additional programs and customized firmware. Programs such as JailbreakMe allow users to jailbreak their Apple devices. Once the device is jailbroken, users can do pretty much anything they please with it.
Before Using JailbreakMe on an iPod Touch
Before using JailbreakMe 2.0 on an iPod Touch, make sure the device is running the right firmware. It needs to have iOS 4.0.1 or earlier, since JailbreakMe 2.0 does not support any upgrades past iOS 4.0.1. It is a smart idea to backup any data on the iPod touch before beginning the jailbreaking process, which can be done by syncing the device to iTunes. Once the jailbreak is complete, it is wise to save SHSH Blobs as well. The device will also need to have a working Wifi connection in order to download the app.
Downloading JailbreakMe onto an iPod Touch
1. To download JailbreakMe, access the jailbreakme.com website from the iPod Touch’s Safari browser.
2. At the bottom of the page there will be an “Install AppSnapp Installer” link.
3. Tap the AppSnapp and the installation will begin.
4. Once the download is complete, there will be a bar that reads “Slide to Unlock.” Slide the bar and the main page of the iPod touch will now have a blue icon titled Installer. Clicking on the icon will install the application. Follow any prompts that come up and once the installation is complete, the device has been jailbroken.
Removing JailbreakMe from the iPod Touch
JailbreakMe is fully reversible. If at any point, you want to remove JailbreakMe from the iPod Touch, simply attach the device to the computer and let it sync. Open iTunes and select the Restore option. The iPod Touch will revert to its original factory conditions. This means that any music, videos, or other files stored on the disk will be lost, so be sure that everything is properly backed up before restoring. It is important to leave the iPod connected to the computer during the entire restore process. Once the process is complete, the iPod Touch will be as if it were completely new.
Risks of Using JailBreakMe on an iPod Touch
Jailbreaking is now legal under a new DMCA exemption from the Library of Congress, which means that there are no legal ramifications of using JailbreakMe 2.0 or any other jailbreaking application. However, Apple does not allow users to jailbreak a device and doing so voids the warranty. In addition, Apple approved programs are guaranteed to be free of viruses and malware. As a result, jailbreaking an iPod Touch, or any other Apple device, puts the device at a greater security risk.
Using JailbreakMe 2.0 is a quick and easy way to jailbreak an iPod Touch and doing so provides the ability for custom firmware on an Apple device. Though there are inherent risks, many people feel they are outweighed by the benefits gained from jailbreaking.
