The Humble Indie Bundle combines the best from the indie dev scene, and this year’s is an all-star package
The Humble Indie Bundle is a great cause, because it brings greater indie game that are cross-platform for a massive saving compared to buying them individually. Then all the money goes to charity, and this year’s does all that while proving the best indie games from 2011.
It’s literally an all-star package: first off, we’ve got Limbo. It’s basically a platformer, but the platforming isn’t where the game sells itself. With a dark, almost noire, aesthetic the game is creepy to the extreme and is based around a kid who wakes up in a world he knows nothing about. You’ll be facing kids who are out to get you, giant spiders, and puzzles which will cause you die lots. Is it real, or is it a dream world? Where did you come from? You’ll have to play to find out.
Second, it’s Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery EP. This is the game I’m playing the moment, and the one I knew least about. It is a point-and-click adventure game, originally designed for touch, as you play as an exploring warrior as you search for the three Trigod pieces (in essence, the Triforce from The Legend of Zelda). The story is captivating alone, but the focus on sound and really hard puzzles incentivise players to continue through the difficulty.
Third, we have Amnesia: The Dark Descent – probably the most terrifying and nightmare-inducing horror game you’ll play. I’m not spoiling the plot because it’s integral the game, Wikipedia does that job, but the emphasis on maintaining light and the sanity of the character is essential if you literally don’t want to go mad. If you think you think you’ve played the scariest of horror games, then try this. It’s fun.
Fourth, Psychonauts. Tim Schafer’s critical darling but tragically under-performing psychic platformer. In a summer camp, you control a psychic child who is trying to become a Psychonaut before his parents arrive to take him away. Gameplay is inside the minds of others, as you explore their past. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and it’s Psychonauts.
Four more games are also available.
