Here We Go Again: Metal Gear Solid 5 Is Happening
Metal Gear Solid 4 is the final chapter in the Solid Snake Sag-oh, wait, Hideo Kojima confirmed there’s an MGS 5
So Solid Snake was pretty old in Metal Gear Solid 4, and we thought that was the last of him. It isn’t, apparently, and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima said there’s a Metal Gear Solid 5 coming.
MGS 5 will use the new Fox engine; internally there’s a tech demo of the game to show lighting and interactions. The Fox engine is the next generation engine compared to the one used in Metal Gear Solid 4, which looked fantastic despite being five years old at this point. The earliest we’re going to see Metal Gear Solid 5 is next year – though I wouldn’t bet on that – so the title is very likely next-gen. In which case, it’s going to look awesome even as a launch title.
I’m not sure I want it as an Orbis launch title, though, because a few years into the cycle it’ll look disappointing. Metal Gear Solid 5 needs to be mid-cycle, in my opinion.
Choice in Next-Gen MGS?
Kojima also revealed a couple of details on MGS 5: there will be a focus on infiltration, espionage and convincing people to come around to your way of thinking. Second, he mentioned Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and the social interactions in that title. In Human Revolution there are multiple ways to approach social interactions, so having the choice to kill or let someone live (though hopefully the choices won’t be that simple) could be something new to the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Despite the focus on stealth, there’s still a fixed objective. But then there’s the question of what fans perceive Metal Gear Solid to be.
On Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance – the title featuring half man, half cyborg Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4 – Kojima said that it’s never claimed to be a Metal Gear Solid title. It’s been said in the past the game isn’t Metal Gear Solid canon, hence the Solid-to-Rising name change. Revengeance is set before Metal Gear Solid 4.
Kojima also said he wanted to kill off Snake in Guns of Patriots, but that’s obviously been scrapped.
