Happy Birthday Windows 7: Goodbye Windows XP

Last week, Microsoft celebrated the anniversary of Windows 7. Windows 7 has been sold over 240 million times since its release and is the fastest selling OS in history. More after the break.

Windows 7 Anniversary

During the last 90 days, 1 Windows 7 copy is sold every 8.35 seconds. Unbelievable, huh?

How long will Microsoft support Windows XP?

Microsoft stopped selling copies to retailers last Friday. There will still be copies available for a couple months, but then XP will no longer be available in stores, only ebay and other second-hand sources.

Windows XP will still get security updates until 2014, but it’s no longer supported. Windows XP is simply too old, not as secure as Windows 7 and soon you will start having problems to find any up-to-date drivers for your hardware.

Some interesting Windows 7 stats (estimates)

  • The Win7 Start Menu will be opened more than 14.1 billion times.
  • Aero Snap will be used almost 151 million times.
  • Aero Shake will be shaken almost 20.6 million times.
  • Jumplists will be used more than 339.1 million times.
  • Some 12,643 unique applications will be pinned to the Task Bar or Start Menu.
