God of War 4: Ascension Multiplayer Confirmed, Set As Series Prequel

God of War 4 Ascension will have a multiplayer mode – the first ever in a GoW title

God of War: Ascension will be the first God of War title to feature multiplayer, and it looks to be a goodie

Yes, finally, there’s another God of War title coming. Set as a prequel and continuing as a PlayStation 3 exclusive (no surprises there), Ascension is bringing multiplayer to the God of War franchise and it looks ambitious.

Game director Todd Papy unveiled the most last week in Hollywood, and has talked about the mode in more detail. The mode is playable up to eight players, and two teams compete in a mode compared to Call of Duty’s Domination mode (where players capture and defend flags, where more flags means a faster rate of point accumulation). At the end, though, there’s a twist: players have to defeat a boss to win. If that’s the case, I don’t really get why the dev team would add that: won’t the whole player vs player situation be nullified?

The level show off was a multi-level map, with a one-eyed cyclops – called Polythemus – watching over the map and interacting. The combat seem to be heavily influenced by the violence in Gears of War, as players could chop others in half and disembowel enemies. Not for the faint hearted then.

Papy said the team wanted to bring the big moments to the multiplayer, presumably to those from the single player campaign, as players attach chains to the cyclops as another player puts out its eye.

Teamwork

The maps also include chests, traps and other features for players who aren’t that good at the melee combat (though I’m sure players can do both). Papy added that they wanted to make sure players could do multiple thing to help out the team.

Teamwork also means players can outnumber players, in 2 vs 1 or 3 vs 1 situations. However, players who are facing the odds do have options to get out of the situations and can even win the battles. That depends on player skill, though.

Pappy also said the team wanted to bring great melee combat, which has only ben seen in Super Smash Bros. on a mass scale (though could also do well in PlayStation All-Star Battle Royal).
