Big business has shown a keen interest in Windows 8 tablets while at the same time more or less ignoring Windows 8 in every other form.
Windows 8 Gaining Traction In Enterprise Only As Tablets
Microsoft has a heavily entrenched customer base in the Enterprise. So Windows 8 was expected to make inroads there faster than elsewhere. However, it turns out that businesses are more interested in Windows 8 tablets than anything else. That, plus the healthy avoidance of new OS commonly seen in Enterprise seems to have made sure that Windows 8 has a slow climb in Enterprise.
Enterprises have also shown interest in tablet convertibles that have earned nicknames like ‘tabtops’ and ‘laptablets’.
- Windows 8 Enterprise became available on August 16 and it has since been downloaded 500,000 times.
So it would seem like Enterprise is really interested but a survey done by Gartner paints a completely different picture.
Gartner’s survey of IT Leaders in the industry revealed that 9 out of 10 would not deploy Windows 8 on a serious level till after 2014. This shows a two year delay till they start using Windows 8 on serious level. And the reality is that with a few due exceptions, most companies are just getting on to upgrading their Windows XP machines to Windows 7. So there’s little realistic chance of Windows 8 entering here.
Bring-Your-Own-Device: Use Your Own Device At Work
However, the tablets and convertibles are a different story altogether. Thanks to Windows 8’s built in Enterprise features, a lot of these devices would natively support technologies that otherwise forced users to have separate work devices. One of Windows 8’s much talked about advantage was the bring-your-own-device wave that it would create. Workers can finally carry their devices in to their workplace and meet all the security requirements common to enterprise.
So what does it all mean for the regular user? If you are working in big business, you are not going to get a brand new Windows 8 workstation with a slick new touchscreen. However, you might be able to take your Windows 8 tablet to work. Or you might even be given one by your company that will save you the trouble of buying one for yourself.
