Free Windows 7 for XP-Downgraders

    Share

According to TechARP.com all systems (running Windows Vista OR Windows XP) that are purchased between June 2009 and January 2010 will have an optional Windows 7 upgrade.

On top of that, Windows 7 buyers will have the option to downgrade to either Windows Vista (why would you do that?) or Windows XP.

So, let’s assume you buy a PC right now, but you don’t like Vista and downgrade to XP, then you will be able to upgrade to Windows 7 for free, once it has been released.

Warning: Should you buy a PC that has Windows XP pre-installed, then you get no free upgrade to Windows 7. The reason is that those PC’s will not have a Windows Vista COA (Certificate of Authenticity).

Warning2: The XP downgrade (from Win7 to XP) will only be available for a limited time. Now this might not be so important for endusers, but it’s a crucial information for businesses who decide that Windows 7 is just not worth the trouble.

Id say that was a popular opinion.

I wont confuse the issue by asking about which version of Windows 7 this would relate to and or if it includes the hobbled starter version, what I will say is that if MS is so convinced that Win7 is the “second coming” of OS’s, why would they feel the need to offer a downgrade policy for 7 back to XP at all?

Remember that whilst Microsoft claims theres nothing wrong with Vista, users say a different story (some of which who are seeking legal solutions) What faith does this give a user in respect of Win7 when we only have to cast our mind back a little to the pre-Vista hype and praise. It was a little different when the thing was released wasnt it?

Could it maybe be that MS is seeing some issues that we are not aware of and preempting any possible “legal” issues by offering a downgrade from day one? The author of this article asks a good question in relation to this “why would you do that?” and Im sure the same was thought pre-Vista release.

Moving on, I think MS need to get Win7 out quick, this is due to a (IMO) general dislike of Vista and a willingness to try alternatives. From my own experience, I do not see interest nor excitement from the average user in respect of the impending Win7 release, infact the Vista experiences they have is a reason NOT to further upgrade. Thats my experience, but the only Win7 worship I see is from the experienced MS users who either have a financial interest in seeing the release of Win7 or they know no better.

There are many “tech enthusiasts” on the net, who have no experience of anything other than Microsoft products. Say what you will about Linux/Mac users, but I doubt you will find many (if any at all) that dont also have a wealth of experience on a Windows platform aswell. So what does this say about Windows?

Unless someone wants to claim that Ive gone through life simply running Linux, then I think its safe to say that Ive had my experience of numerous OS’s. I was a PC user before Windows made an appearance, I was around for the rise (and eventual demise) of the A500. I saw NES’s,PC ENGINE’s, SNES’s, Jaguars come and go. I used the Acorn Archimedes and in the midst of all this followed the Windows/Microsoft path through work/home.

I use Linux at home. Why? Because I have an honest held belief its the better system. I am not in the habit of running software that is not functional or “fit for purpose” and if Linux wasnt up to the task (free or not) I certainly wouldnt bother promoting it.

Tech blogs such as this often only provide a one sided view of options available to the user, and whilst that is fine comments such as “…but it’s a crucial information for businesses who decide that Windows 7 is just not worth the trouble.” are a little suggestive in that they dont highlight the fact that in more recent times Windows isnt even a consideration at all.
Look no further than the French police who have migrated to FOSS. One example of a government body who, instead of staying with the “mainstream” has looked at alternatives and found a better solution.

If I can end on one point. My blog may be aimed at Linux users, however you will see that on occasion where Microsoft have released worthy products (XP and the 360 IMO) I am more than happy to champion them. Honest held belief and diversity in software solutions are what I promote, and regardless of what you think of alternatives to MS, you cant disagree that competition is a good thing because it forces companies to provide better value/products for the most important person – the end user.
