I only have one user and have never encountered this before. I started up my laptop like always and it logged me onto a temporary Profile. I was highly annoyed as I had yet to back up computer and so lost all my data,my bookmarks, certain programs on my desktop, my personal settings were back to default. I figured it would go back to normal if I restarted my computer.
Unfortunately it didn’t, the computer just logged back onto a temporary profile.

I don’t know much about computers and don’t really want to lose any of my old data.

How would I fix this and would I be able to get all my old setting back?

for some reason the fix does not work. does the registry need to be saved? When I close out it does not ask if I want to save changes. after the reboot i log back in as the problem user and the message comes back. When I log back in as myself (network admin) and go back into the registry, the bak for the problem user has returned.
    please help!
    Thanks!

I wasn’t clear on the “c\users\%username%”, so I substituted my username for the “%username%”. I hope that is what was intended. In two separate attempts I both renamed and deleted the register key designating the temporary profile. I renamed the register key designating my true profile by eliminating the .bak file extension. I renamed both the “my username” folder and the TEMP folder in the users folder on the c drive, and the data field of the “ProfileImagePath” attribute is c:\users\”my username”. The type field is “REG_EXPAND_SZ”, differing from the type field of all the other attributes as well as from your example. The .bak file extension is recreated along with another duplicate register key, and the TEMP folder is recreated in the users folder, although the “my username” folder is not recreated.

Could it possibly be that the “REG_EXPAND_SZ” the problem?
