Microsoft isn’t leaving stones unturned with its developer conference starting a week after Windows 8 launches in October

We’re excited for the launch of Windows 8, though we’re not sure when devices will launch for the platform. Microsoft said on Surface, the company’s two tablets, will launch around the general availability of Windows 8 though we don’t know exactly when that will be

Windows 8 launches October 26. Sources speaking to ZDNet claim Microsoft’s mobile operating system Windows Phone 8 will launch October 29, just four days after Windows 8, and it also revealed the first devices will launch two weeks after. Judging by that release plan, Microsoft’s comments about general availability could indicate a similar window.

It also suggest Microsoft wants to keep the products close together. That makes sense considering the company is pushing cross-platform app development, a move perhaps to boost Windows Phone’s app store: the mobile operating systems is lagging behind Apple and Google’s platforms. It is seeing over 100 apps submitted per day, compared to over 600 and 700 respectively.

Windows 8 Needs To Be A Success

And that may be exactly what Microsoft is thinking. From October to November 2 there will be the Microsoft Build developer event, focusing on multiple Microsoft products — including Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Both platforms use Modern UI and, therefore, developing apps for both platforms should be straightforward. It’s a similar feature to iOS: universal apps are marked by a plus icon in the App Store for users know the app works on iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch without requiring separate downloads.

ZDNet described the October 29 launch of Windows Phone 8 as the consumers launch, so that’s probably how Microsoft sees the laych of Windows 8 October 26. I expect to see devices before the early weeks of November, though, including Surface. It would seem strange for Microsoft o launch and a new version of Windows and not give the consumer ability to test out products.

Windows 8 launches October 26.
