Wondering when the first Service Pack for Windows 8 will be released? We are speculating a little about this release date – for the fun of it.
Possible Release Dates
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 was released back in 2011, on February 22, while the original release date of the OS was back in October 2009 on the 22nd. According to Microsoft, Windows 8 will hit the stores on October 26th, 2012 (source), so both operating systems have similar release dates. With all of the information in mind, here is a first release date:
Windows 8 Service Pack 1 Release Date:
- Approx: Early 2014
- Approx: Q3/Q4 2013 (if there are many bugs, security flaws, MSFT’s shortens cycle)
Windows 8 SP1 Changes (Speculation)
Although Windows 8 seems pretty stable, we are very certain that Microsoft will be very busy fixing “Metro UI” bugs and improve usuability. All in all, we expect that there will be more patches during the initial phase after the release than we would normally expect from a OS. The new store might also receive regular patches and security updates.
With all of that in mind, it is very possibly that Microsoft will issue a Service Pack far earlier than anticipated during the 2nd half of 2013.
Also, keep in mind that Microsoft is busy working on a new desktop OS, namely Windows 9. They have mentioned numerous times that they want to shorten their release cycle, which does not necessarily mean they will have to adjust Service Pack release dates, but it’s possible.
