1 Tomb Raider
The Tomb Raider has been through the ringer in recent years with a number of lacklustre releases seemingly burying the franchise with the Uncharted series taking over the action-adventure genre. Well it seems you can’t keep a good girl down and Square Enix’s brave step to take the series back to the start has paid off. Gamers got to experience a younger more rookie version of Lara Croft as she learns the ropes in an adventure that was warmly received by critics and gamers alike and got the series right back on track.
2 DMC:Devil May Cry
Another successful reboot of a franchise that was treading bare. The Devil May Cry series had seemingly run its course before Ninja Theory decided to shake things up with this release. The initial trailer was widely mocked by fans with many fearing the worst but the “Western” version of Dante that Capcom requested proved to have what it takes in the end .While many have still to warm to Dantes redesign the games was praised by reviewers. The games sold less than expected however especially with Eastern gamers who responded poorly to the new western approach to the characters.
3 Metal Gear Rising:Revengeance
When Konami announced that they were designing a game solely around the Cyber Ninja Raiden from the Metal Gear Solid series many gamers reacted with trepidation. The series was always known for stealth and a crazy story which simply do not fit well with the hack and slash genre the game was seeking to be part of. Raiden remains one of the worst characters in gaming history despite how much Kojima tries to fool us into thinking he is cool but when the worst complaint about a game is the main character is annoying it bodes well. The game itself reviewed well and Kojima is said to be very happy with sales.
4 Injustice:Gods Among us
People loves superheroes and flock to see blockbuster after blockbuster in the cinema whether it is Batman, Superman or the Watchmen. However their record in gaming culture is less than stellar with only the recent Batman Arkham Asylum releases bucking the trend in not stinking the place out. Injustice however pits numerous stars of the DC comic’s guest list into one fighting style game and delivers! It was widely praised for its story (unusually for the fighting game genre) which sees Superman losing the plot and also for its Mortal Kombat inspired combat gameplay.
5 Bioshock Infinite
Bioshock Infinite is the “true” sequel to 2007s game of the year Bioshock. It brings plasmids and powers from an underworld metropolis to the clouds in glorious fashion with the incredible atmosphere the series is known for producing fully intact. A sometimes rocky launch with a few expo no shows need not have worried gamers as the game was critically acclaimed by critics and sold well. It is definitely the best game of 2013 – so far.
