Steam Summer Sale Day 1: What You Should Have Bought

Steam Summer Sale

Steam’s 2012 Summer Sale is live, along with 503 errors every five minutes. If you can get into the store, you’re going to be spending plenty of money so here’s what you should have bought

We thought it would be a neat idea to recap what’s happening in this year’s Steam Summer Sale in 2012, and how you can get the biggest discounts

Valve was pretty quiet with the launch of the Steam Summer Sale: suddenly the Store didn’t load, so we knew it was live. A general rule is wait for the Daily Deals, whatever game you’re waiting for.

Day one opened with something we’ve never seen before: Flash Sales. These are time-limited sales that could be one-off events – we don’t know, because the sale lasts until July 22 – and we got great games such as Rayman: Origins. Apparently Saints Row 3 was a Flash Sale, going for $12.50, but buying games when you’re asleep is pretty hard. The community can also voted on the next Flash Sale: currently it’s Brink, Ghost Recon 2: Advanced Warfighter and Stronghold 3. Vote, erm, Brink? Those games are pretty hold, and Brink isn’t even worth playing.

The Daily Deals currently are: Crusader Kings 2 at 75% off, Callof Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at half price, Portal 2 at 75% off, Ridge Racer Unbounded at 75% off, Legend of Grimrock at 60% off, Terrari at 75% off, Total War Shogun 2 at 75% off, Might & Magic Heroes VI at 50% off and Indie Bundle 1 which includes game such as Cave Story+ and EDGE at 75% off.

Don’t Buy Pack Deals

There are also Pack Deals, notably Bethesda’s at 40% off and the Rockstar collection at 56% off. If you own most of the games it’s not worth buying, so check the deals out for yourself and see what you’re missing or wait for the Daily Deal on a particular game.

Current Flash Sales are Sanctum, Spellforce 2: Faith in Destiny, Darksiders – probably the highlight – and Star Wars: Force Unleashed 2. They’re pretty old games, but they’re so cheap it’s almost a no-brainer decision. You’ve only wasted a few dollars/pounds/Euros if you buy.

Tunes in for the roundup of Day 2 of the Steam Summer Sale tomorrow!
