Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 announced. Release date scheduled for this summer (Japan)

Coming to Nintendo DS this summer for Japan, autumn for Europe and U.S.

Last weekend Game Freak director Junichi Masuda teased fans on Twitter by saying that a new entry in the Pokemon franchise would be revealed, describing it as very important, saying to tune in to the Japanese television show Pokemon Smash. On Sunday last week, the day of the show, it was revealed that this title was not the widely expected Pokemon Gray but Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2.

On Smash it was confirmed that the title was heading to the Nintendo DS, not the 3DS, though both can also be played in 2D on the 3DS, this June in Japan. The Japanese website for both games is live, showing what appears to be a new approach to the franchise with numbering for sequels on the logos rather than creating a different colour as has been common. This morning Nintendo UK has also confirmed that Black 2 and White 2 will be released simultaneously this year in Europe in autumn, with Nintendo of America confirming an autumn release window for the U.S. too.

Masuda also mentioned the names of the legendary Pokemon, images of which are on the Japanese and U.S. websites, will be coming in the Sunday broadcast despite originally teasing them for last week. From what can be gathered, the images are two new versions of Kyurem – a legendary Pokemon from the original Black and White – who will serve as the version mascot for the games. The U.S. site also calls both games ‘incredible new adventures’, implying that they are sequels. The U.S. website also says to expect new information to be revealed through the year with news, images and videos to be expected.

There has been no explanation on why Black and White 2 are being designed for the DS and not the 3DS. Whether this was a decision by Nintendo is unknown, particularly because Nintendo does not have full control over The Pokemon Company, but some fans had been expecting a shake up of the franchise perhaps with full 3D models and worlds.

Pokemon Black Version 2 and White Version 2 are releasing this June for Japan, and autumn for Europe and North America, on the Nintendo DS.
