Microsoft announced on Friday that buyers of the Microsoft Surface RT tablet, are now eligible to receive a free Touch Cover, Touch Cover Limited Edition, or Type cover with purchase. But experts wonder is this a ploy or are Surface RT sales suffering?
With Friday’s announcement by Microsoft, they are now giving customers the ability to personalize and give them the keyboard that is missing from their iPad competitors. The free Touch Cover, a normally $119 item, gives customers the ability to type and gives them a full keyboard they can use on the Surface RT
Types of Surface RT Covers
With a Surface RT purchase from Microsoft starting May 31st, customers now will receive a free Touch Cover, Touch Cover Limited Edition, or Type Cover. The Touch Cover which is a dual-purpose and pressure sensitive keyboard gives users the ability to type documents on their Surface RT and gives them a built in cover at the same time. The Touch Cover for the Surface RT also protects the Surface RT and comes in a number of different colors, including Black, White, Cyan, Magenta, and Red. The Limited Edition covers come in different designs to personalize their Surface RT and gives them the ability to type Office documents on their Surface RT easily.
Surface RT Touch Cover Versus iPad No Cover
With the Touch Cover, Microsoft gives users a full keyboard to type on for complete operations of their unit, and the full ability to type, edit, to redo documents, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations from anywhere. The Apple iPad doesn’t include any type of cover or keyboard, and this promotion from Microsoft can be exactly what will drive Surface RT sales at retail and Enterprise levels, as users have begged Apple for a keyboard, but have had to purchase third party covers from Logitech and other.
Too Little Too Late For Surface RT
Some experts though have asked today, whether this promotion by Microsoft is a last ditch effort to save the Surface RT. Microsoft has never released official numbers regarding Surface RT sales and compared to the Apple iPad, it is a distant number in sales from their competitor. But, Microsoft by offering this $119 free Touch Cover will appease new customers of the Surface RT and offer them something that Apple cannot do.
Will users purchase the Surface RT just because of the free Touch Cover? It’s possible, but it might not be enough to save the Surface RT at the retail level. The introduction of the Surface Pro at the higher price levels attracts more business and Enterprise users, but consumers are the main focus of the Surface RT, and this latest promo might give them the perfect addition to their latest Surface dream purchase.
