It was interesting to see what Microsoft was showing us with Windows Phone 8 in relation to Windows 8, though we didn’t learn a whole lot about it
There were some clues towards Windows 8
If you were expecting a lot of information about Windows 8 then, well, you didn’t get a lot. However, cues towards design and maybe the launch date for devices hinted towards Windows 8.
If you noticed anything about the Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone you probably noticed it’s in quite a few striking colors and brings over the Lumia 920’s striking design. We don’t know whether Nokia is launching its own Windows 8 tablets, but we do know that Microsoft wants manufacturers to build better hardware.
Nokia is certainly creating devices I’d like to see running Windows 8. Does that mean we’ll get them? Probably not after the immediate launch of Windows 8: Lenovo’s ThinkPad Windows 8 device is, well, underwhelming. It’s a black slab. When Microsoft launched Surface, the small tablet, not the giant version, it challenged original equipment manufacturers to build better devices. The partners need to to differentiate from Apple and the iPad, unless a yellow version launches next year.
The Nokia Lumia 920 is launching early November, so Windows Phone 8 is going to launch around that time. I’ve had a consistent feeling Microsoft is going to launch Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 around the same time due to the ability to co-develop applications for the platforms due to the new Metro UI. We know Windows 8 is launching October 26; the devices are launching probably immediately after, therefore. That means come to arrival of Microsoft’s store in Toronto, Canada, we may see new Microsoft products on the desktop and mobile front.
It’s seems strange to me that Apple refines the iPad, making it thinner while offering the same black or white color, and consumers rush to buy it. Yet Lenovo rolls out essentially the same form factor and it is criticized. It seems software is the key factor when deciding on a device.
Windows 8 launches October 26. Windows Phone 8’s release date is to be announced.
