A persistent rumor now meets the truth. There will be no XBOX720 presentation at the E3 2012.
Kinect Is Supposed To Justify Long Lifespan
In an interview with GameSpot, Microsoft’s Senior Marketing Director Jose Pinero revealed that Microsoft has no plans to unveil the XBOX720 at the E3 2012. Microsoft believes that the Kinect adds enough value to increase the lifespan of the XBOX even further at this point.
If you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. Microsoft does not make a lot of money selling a brand-new console. It takes a lot of time to break even on a console. Companies like Amazon even sell devices like the Kindle with a great loss, because they know the rewards later on will be worth the trouble. If you can extend the lifespan of a console, you make a lot more money.
Console First, PC later – trend will slow down progress!
However, this also means that console games will effectively slow down the progress of game graphics. During the last 10 years we saw a significant growth and we are approaching a time where some game screenshots look much like a real photo. With the outdated hardware that’s inside the consoles, developers can not effectively unleash their full potential. Let’s face it, console games sell a lot better than PC games and and awesome lot of games are developed for consoles first and then ported over to PC (Dungeon Siege 3, Red Faction Armageddon, anyone?)
Conclusion: This is really a let-down, but I’m not complaining, I will continue to play games like Skyrim on the PC and for arcade and social games I’ll use my XBOX. Games that were developed for console (DS3) I’d rather get for XBOX due to the poor controls of PC ports.
