iTunes won’t open in Windows 7

iTunes won't open Windows 7 So, I installed iTunes on Windows 7 today, but it won’t open, no matter what I do. Even in compatibility mode it won’t open at all.
Do you have problems running iTunes on Windows 7 as well? Let’s find out where the problem is.

First of all, make sure that you have the correct installer. If you are on 64bit Windows 7, then you will need the 64bit iTunes installer, which you can get at:

When everything fails, restart!

Ok, so I tried running iTunes in compatibility mode. To do that right-click on the iTunes icon and click on “Properties”. Go to the tab “Compatibility” and check “Run this program in compatibility mode” and select Windows Vista from the dropdown field.
Apparently that didn’t help much.

After launching the process manager via CTRL + ATL + DEL, I noticed that the process iTunes.exe was running, but I wasn’t able to force quit the process.

After a restart, I was able to start iTunes.exe and since I was still running it in compatibility mode it came up with a nice welcome message:

“iTunes.exe has been set to run in compatibility mode for an older version of Windows. For best results, turn off compatibility mode for iTunes before you open it.”

iTunes compatibility mode

Still not working?

Did you restart your PC? Did you try to force quit iTunes?
If you can answer the questions with yes and it still doesn’t work, then you might want to try to reinstall Apple Quicktime.
iTunes requires QuickTime 7.6.4 or later. QuickTime comes with iTunes, but sometimes it can get corrupted, therefore it is recommended to install it manually if you can’t open iTunes.

You can download Quicktime here.

Other than that, I recommend to scan your system files. Enter sfc.exe /scannow into Command Prompt.

When I click on my iTunes icon on my desktop, ‘The folder “iTunes” is on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this order” pops up. What does that mean, and what should I do?

I tryed to open itunes 9.0 and it will not open in win 7 64bit. It used to up untill about 4 days ago. I tried uninstall and reinstalled the newest version. Still same problem. I have done a chkdsk and everything is fine. Apple does not seem to have any support for this as far as I can see. Any ideas. I do know more than the average user, so I have tried various remedys. No luck.

I tried for days. uninstalling every thing to do with apple, Quicktime and itunes completely from my PC. For some unknown reason. And since there is nowhere on the apple website to get this resolved. Itunes has been reloaded three times and I still cannot open itunes. So with that said and trying every suggestion Ive heard. I went to winAmp. Whicj BTW I find superior. Winamp actually recognises my droid. And any other player I connect to it. Not only that but I can get lyrics of songs(handy if your a muscician like me). So cya later Itunes. And any other apple product for that matter.

FWIT – Reinstall or repair Quicktime. That did it for me on a number of occasions on various client-owned computers.

This worked for me. I have been trying to open itunes all night, and for some reason it wouldn’t open. So I followed your suggestion to reinstall QuickTime and it opened. Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction.

I find it strange that all of the sudden my quicktime went bad causing my itunes to follow. ..

I know it sounds weird, but I had a printer plugged into a USB port on the computer and it was preventing itunes from opening. Unplugged the printer, and Presto, itunes opens. Plugged printer in, and itunes won’t open.

Like I said, weird I know, but just hope it helps someone because I tried everything else.
