For the first time it feels like Apple’s iPhone isn’t the best smartphone available, and sizeable competition is coming

Apple Iphone 5 Event

The answer is it went alright. Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 after building up its MacBook Pro lineups and Mac OS X Mountain Lion, the company’s most recent version of its desktop operating system. The iPhone 5 reflected an iterative update to a product that feels like its filling its potential, though that may be good enough for a lot of users.

The iPhone 5 is the thinnest iPhone ever, and the the thinnest smartphone around despite what Motorola would have you believe, with a 4-inch screen and an increased resolution to accommodate for the bigger screen. It was basically the biggest feature Apple unveiled the iPhone. It seems like Apple is stretching announcements if that’s it headline-grabbing feature.

I wanted iOS to be refreshed. To add a fifth row of icons is the most underwhelming addition Apple could have made. If I wanted a fifth row of icons I could have jailbroken my phone, and I didn’t. Obviously the feature isn’t that compelling.

Not What We Wanted

We haven’t got the ability to set default apps, and we haven’t got the ability store more apps in a folder. This seems like basic functionality that should be included, yet again to be reserved for the jailbreaking community. I get the impression Apple was reluctant to bring the four-inch screen.

It designs also changed from the iPhone 4 and 4S, built from the ground up according to marketing head Phil Schiller, that features an aluminum back rather than glass. The metal sides, and the controversial antenna placement, is also repositioned. It’s very much an incremental update and could have easily been the iPhone 4S last year. I didn’t get the impression that this was the flagship iPhone for the next 12 months; it could easily be surpassed by Android and Windows Phone devices.

Apple said iPhone 5 is available from pre-order September 14, so get up early if you’re interested. The phone released September 21 for $199, $299, and $399 on two-year contracts.
