Create-A-Class: Black Ops 2 And Its New Approach To Customizable Classes

Black Ops 2 Customizable Class

The rumors of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 allowing you equip just a knife, in exchange for six killstreaks, or more weapon customization in exchange for less killstreaks, is true. It’s called Create-A-Class, and lives up to the name.

Providing knife lunging isn’t overpowered, Create-A-Class could have a solid risk-reward dynamic.

For the first time since Modern Warfare debuted back in 2005, Call of Duty could be taking the step forward the franchise needs. While the feel and fundamentals of Call of Duty remain, developers Treyarch is providing a twist on old elements to make them fresh and interesting in a franchise slowly becoming drab.

Create-A-Class is one of the changes. Basically, the idea of having a custom class with a Primary and Secondary Weapon, a grenade type, a perk (or two, if there’s a death perk), and three killstreaks is gone. You can have none of that, it all, or more (with consequences). You have 10 spaces to fill in any way you like.

It gets pretty crazy. You can have six perks, a knife, and revolver (this is in the multiplayer reveal trailer below) or less perks and more customizations for weapons. To further switch up the experience, players can use a Wildcard. Almost game-breaking, players can equal two primary weapons at once or have three attachments on one gun. So dual-wielding shotguns while sprinting around is now possible. The downside is a wildcard consumes a slot of the 10 available. Dual wielding shotguns, with 9 slots still available, seems a tad overpowered.

No More Back-And-Forth Between Menus For Once

The options are also presented in a grid, with icons representing weapons in equipment. Even though the menus and sub-menus in the original Black Ops are super responsive, it’s a pain going in an out of each category.

I’m curious to see if balance is an issue with Create-A-Class. A consistent criticism I’ve had against Call of Duty is the lack of balance, where high-level chopper killstreaks that kill players as soon as stepping — or spawning — outside. Or the hit detection of weapons not consistently working, so even though I’m depleting my gun’s clip enemies don’t die. Like sniper rifle bullet-in-the-head die.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 release November 13 on Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3.
