Call of Duty Ghosts is going to use an upgraded version of the existing engine

Call of Duty Ghosts is going to use an upgraded version of the existing engine and it has also being confirmed that development has been geared towards the next generation with the current generation receiving “port down” versions.

The next Call of Duty will use an upgraded version of the current engine

Call of Duty has been based of the same engine for a number of games and the approach isn’t going to changing anytime soon with the upcoming release of Call of Duty Ghosts. It is not anything to worry about too much though as the teams at Infinity Ward and Treyarch constantly upgrade and refine their engine to ensure it will meet the expectations the next generation is likely to raise.

While some companies like to call their updated engines “new” , Infinity Ward have refrained from doing so .

“When we’re [internally] talking about a new engine we’re talking about upgrading significant systems within that engine,” animation lead Zach Volker states. “We’re not talking about throwing it all away and saying we’re starting from the ground up. It comes down to the systems we’re augmenting and upgrading, and trying to decide what is the significance of this upgrade.”

The good news is that the game is expected to be running at a constant 60fps on both the current generation and next generation of consoles. Smooth gameplay and a high constant frame rate is a staple of the series and something fans have come to expect.

Next generation consoles a priority for Call of Duty: Ghosts team

In other developments it has also been announced that the teams are focusing on the next gen releases with the game being built with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in mind. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will receive “port down” versions according to vice president of production Daniel Suarez.

“I can’t talk specific differences, but I will say from a general standpoint, we’re going to be making the game for next-gen and bringing it down for the current generation,” Suarez mentions.

“The current generation [version] will look better than any current generation version we’ve done to date.

“There are things that we’re doing on next gen that will port down or at least work on current generation that weren’t done before.” he continues.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is expected to be released in November of this year

It has already been announced the game will make use of Kinect voice command from the Xbox one. Furthermore the next generation titles are also likely to see time DLC exclusive to each console.

If the current generation is anything to go by it may take a couple of incarnations before Infinity Ware get everything they can out of the next generation but the anticipation for this release is heating up.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be released on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC from November 5.
