Diablo 3 Sells 6 Million Copies Under a Week: It’s Here, Guys

Apparently server downtime and hacking reports don’t affect game sales.

Diablo 3 has sold 6.3 million copies in around seven days on sale, despite the not-perfect launch

Server downtime? 3003 errors? Hacked accounts? Don’t worry about it … if you’re Blizzard. The Diablo 3 developer has announced the game has sold 6.3 million copies, barely being on sale for seven days.

In fact, 24 hours after launch 3.5 million copies were sold (no wonder the server’s weren’t working) which is consequently an all-time record for the fastest selling PC game. Considering there have been top-drawer PC titles such as Half-Life, Portal and the better-than-console version of Battlefield 3, that’s definitely something to be proud of.

The 3.5 million number doesn’t include 1.2 million players who received Diablo 3 by signing up for the World of Warcraft Annual Pass, which is a year-long description. Blizzard added 4.7 million players logged into Diablo 3 from the first day of launch, which is pretty incredible. I was going to say that people should just wait a couple for all the server issues on launch to calm down, but when you’ve been waiting for over ten years then I imagine the excitement is pretty great. That is, you guessed, the biggest PC launch in the history of … PC gaming?

Breaking retail, platform records

The number is now at 6.3 million, as we go past a week from launch (May 15). Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard, said the team was proud of the launch was regretted the sever issues. He said Blizzard was appreciative of the gameplay feedback gained from players. I’m sure that was, er, complimentary.

It was revealed the game was sold in more than 8,000 retailers worldwide. GameStop said the Diablo 3 launch was one of its biggest for the PC ever, while Amazon revealed the game was the most pre-ordered on the website and broke the record for the best-selling PC game on day one of launch on Amazon.

It’s honestly pretty incredible, and it’s enough to push people into buying the game. Dungeon crawling, at least a game built around it, isn’t usually my kind of experience especially when someone has completed the game in around 5-6 hours.
