Darksiders 2 looks fun, so here’s what the sequel to 2010’s title is all about
Darksiders 2 releases August 14 in North America and August 21 in Europe, so as early as Tuesday next week. Fundamentally the game is similar to The Legend of Zelda series with its 3D action-adventure focus and explorable dungeons, though it would be unfair to call it a clone.
Darksiders 2 aims to be bigger and better than Darksiders 2: one dungeon in Darksiders 2 is the same size as the world of Darksiders 1. Instead of War, from the original Darksiders, players control Death, the leader of the four horsemen the series is based around. There is 25 hours, and more, of gameplay. That will apparently be doubled if 100 percent completion is aimed for.
The game isn’t a sequel to Darksiders chronologically: it takes place during War’s 100-year imprisonment by The Council. The game also takes place outside of Earth, where Darksiders 1 is exclusively set.
There is no multiplayer or co-op support.
Darksiders 2, aside from exploring and travelling between dungeons, is a loot-based game. It’s why you’ll see damage indicators for weapons when attacking enemies, a change from the original Darksiders (though the developers said in a Giant Bomb Quick Look it was a feature wanted in the original). Acquiring loot consequently means players can customize Death, and there will be 2 skill trees. The melee-focused Harbinger, and the Necromancer for magic.
There is also possessed weapons, rare weapons that level up by feeding other weapons. Names can be assigned, and stats increase depending on on the weapons fed. New Game+ allows this gear to be kept. Replaying the game unlocks even stronger weapons.
Combat is broken down into three sections. There’s the main attack, whether pressing a single button for a basic combo or unlocking combination moves for advanced players. Second attacks come in two forms, hammer and melee. The former is slow but powerful, while the latter is fast but limited by its short range. Finally, there are crossover attacks. This is done by switching between your primary and secondary weapons. You can also dodge, jump, grab and pull enemies (to you, and you to them).
Darksiders 2 releases August 14 in North America and August 21 in Europe. It’s available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
