Microsoft has recently announced a very interesting new API mapping tool that allows developers to easily convert their iOS apps to Windows Phone 7. This is interesting because of all the attention that the next version of Windows is getting, which also happens to incorporate a lot Windows Phone 7 features.

Microsoft’s recent release of this mapping tool (available at http://windowsphone.interoperabilitybridges.com/) has heightened the curiosity of a lot of people because of the timing. The latest findings inWindows 8 Milestone 3 suggests that Microsoft has big plans to stay competitive in the markets dominated by Apple and Google at the moment.

It is obvious that both competitors (Apple and Google) have quite a head start, so Redmond-based Microsoft now tries to offer a cross-platform solution to developers who have already invested a lot in one of these existing platforms.

Choosing iOS was of course a logical step because of the sheer numbers of iOS apps (both iPad and iPhone apps are selling like hot cakes as we all know). Allowing developers to convert/port their apps to Windows phone 7 will not only make developers happy but it will also give Microsoft an instant boost and some iPhone users might even switch to the Windows Phone 7 in the end. WP7 is very likely to see a quick increase in the number of popular and well-selling apps in the store.

Mapping Tools To Convert iPhone Apps Are Only The Beginning

The mapping tool allows the developer to convert chunks of iOS code to their C# equivalent. And according to Microsoft spokesperson Jean-Christophe Cimetiere “All WP7 API documentations are pulled in from the Silverlight, C# and XNA sources on MSDN”.

Currently only 3 popular categories have been mapped to the Windows Phone 7 API — Data Management, Network/Internet and User Interface. More to follow soon.
