Can’t activate Windows 7 properly! (slui.exe – 0x80072EE2)

Share

Ok, you have problems to activate Windows 7, right?

Either you are getting the error code 0x80072EE2 or the system can’t find your slui.exe (the exe that is required to activate win7).

I have a solution!

If you are running the AVG (best choice so far) firewall it will block the slui.exe and you will not be able to activate Windows 7. To disable the firewall process you need admin privileges.

First of all you will have to learn how to activate the hidden administrator account in Windows 7:

Activating the hidden admin account

Goto “Start” and enter “cmd” into the search

field.Do not just hit enter. Hold CTRL + Shift and hit Enter! That’s the shortcut to run this as an admin.

Enter the command you can see above:
net user administrator /active:yes

This will activate the hidden admin account.

Switch Users

Simply switch the user account now (Start – select from pulldown menu “shutdown” -> “switch users”.) and you will see the admin account!

Click on the admin icon to switch to that user. Once you are logged in you can disable your firewall which blocked the slui.exe!

Disabling the firewall service

Open the task-manager. Select the tab “services” and locate the AVG firewall service by hitting the key “a” several times. Search for AVGfws8 – right-click -> turn it off.

Activating Windows .. finally

Now open the cmd.exe again (as described above) and enter “slui.exe” to run it. Activate Windows. Done!

Firewalls can be annoying, but better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the tip! I just needed to disable the AVG firewall for the Activation to succeed.

What is the STRG button ??

  5. sOliver said:

Well, what keyboard do you use? A keyboard from europe, usa has a “STRG” key right below “Shift” or left of “Windows-key”.

  6. sOliver said:

Sorry, that was confusing .. US keyboard obviously has a CTRL key not a STRG key. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

Excellent, I got it to work, the Microsoft Activation Key, I am currently using McAfee and I just disable the Firewall for 30 mins.

I get an access denied error when I type the command?

  9. sOliver said:

    Hi David,
which Build are you running and do you already have an admin account?

This could be a permission issue, try to type in cmd into the search field then right-click on “cmd” and select “run as admin”.
Then it should work. Let me know if it works.

  10. David said:

    Hi

Thanks for the response. There is no “run as admin” to select from when I right-click.

    I am running Build 7100

  11. sOliver said:

Well, you have to run it as an administrator. Did you enter cmd and then hold STRG+Shift+Enter? That’s the shortcut to run it as an admin.

If it doesn’t work try to do a right-click on cmd.exe and select properties. Then make sure you have the rights to run it (can be found under “security”->”your username” (e.g. david).

    Hi

When I try to run slui.exe it says the command is not recognised, I removed the .bak from the slui.exe.bak file but not i get an error saying to phone to activate.

    Any ideas?

  13. sOliver said:

Renaming slui.exe.bak to slui.exe was correct if there was no file slui.exe before.
*.bak stands for backup and it’s weird that there was only slui.exe.bak

Actually it’s not error what you get, you are supposed to activate it..wasn’t that your intention? You can do that via internet too.

Let me make this very clear:
You run the slui.exe to activate Windows 7. If you get a message: activate via phone, then it’s working! Simply select activation via internet and you are fine.

when I log in to the administrator account that came out, they ask me for a password. I have not set any password whatsoever so does anyone know the problem???

    Hi

I actually get an error (0×80070422) The service cannot be started….

  16. sOliver said:

Have you tried what I suggested? You need full rights to access the file.
You need to take ownership of slui.exe and activate the hidden admin account.

Seriously, you will fix this if you activate the admin account.

    Do this:
    - log into REAL admin account
    - enter services.msc into search field
    - right-click on “Windows Update” and select properties
    - Make sure to start the service and select “automatic”

  17. sOliver said:

Also try to set the “Windows Modules Installer” to manual startup (you will also find it in the services list).

Services.msc => list of all services
scroll down or type “W” to go to the “W” services like Windows Update

  18. David said:

I’ve done all that but getting the same error?

  19. sOliver said:

Has it worked before? Which firewall did you install?

Try to shutdown everything that could possibly block the connection, double-check that you have all rights to run it.

    Other than that
    a) you could be infected
    b) your slui.exe somehow got deleted and the slui.exe.bak is not working properly

try to get another copy of the slui.exe or do a system repair.

    c) do some research

    what does it stand for
    could you tell this thing
    is this control
    if it is
    then its not working

  25. sOliver said:

Yes, sorry for the confusion STRG = CTRL

And it should work. If not, try to right-click on it and click on “run as administrator”.

If that doesn’t work look on this site for a post “activate hidden hidden admin acount” and then run it on the admin account after activating it.

thanx olive….with your tutorial i am able to get into the admin account…i disables my avast antivirus, windows firewall, windows defender, and software protection.and tried to use toolkit 1.8.
but at the end it came up with an error.
    oxc004c020
The activation server reported that the Multiple Activation Key has exceeded its limit.
    this was the error code…

  38. sOliver said:

which toolkit are you talking about?

    I found this at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938450

    Error code 0xC004C020

    Symptom
When you try to use a MAK to activate one or more computers, you may receive the following error message:
    0xC004C020
The activation server reported that the Multiple Activation Key has exceeded its limit.

    Cause
The MAK has exceeded the activation limit. By design, MAKs have a limited number of activations.
    Workaround
Contact the PA Call Center to obtain a new MAK or to increase the activation limit on the existing MAK.

So, according to them you should call their call center in Pennsylvania? Funny. MAK stands for Multiple Activation Key.

You need to reactivate your Volume (Volume Activation):
    http://www.microsoft.com/licen.....ation.aspx

Are you using Windows 7 Enterprise? I’d try to contact Microsoft directly then.

  40. sOliver said:

you’re most likely on a RC client right? You can’t activate that client, you have to buy Windows 7 and do a clean install. An update is possible but clearly VERY problematic and I wouldn’t bother.

  49. sOliver said:

Yes you can activate Windows 7 offline via phone support.

Run slui.exe as described above, select your country, write down the phone number, call the support, wait and get help to activate Windows offline. Should be easy and the support is usually very friendly, I had to call there sometimes.. so don’t worry they’ll guide you through it.
