We’re getting a third Army of Two title for some reason, and a reboot of the series
EA has confirmed a third Army of Two title is releasing, dubbed The Devil’s Cartel. EA said the reboot – yep, you’re not hearing things – will bring a mature and gritty theme, though Army of Two didn’t seem to appear to the kid demographic. Anyway, Visceral games is developing the game and said it wants to realise the concepts from the original game.
As mentioned Visceral Games is developing The Devil’s Cartel, and will be developed using EA’s Frostbite 2.0 engine. The graphics engine debuted in Battlefield 3, released 2011, and later featured in Need for Speed: The Run. It’s a fantastic engine, but seems more suited for shooters than racing games. So, at the very least, Army or Two will look great.
The game will focus on characters Alpha and Bravo, employees of Tactical Worldwide Operations. The two are in the middle of a Mexican drug war, and that’s about all the details on the plot we have.
Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel will feature split-screen co-op play and new character customizations options, though neither Visceral Games nor EA developed on the option. Hopefully it’s not shallow armor customization, but rather perks/loadouts along with weapon customization.
Unnecessary, But Promising, Reboot
EA said it wants to refresh the Army of Two franchise for a new audience of action gamers, while staying loyal to the concept of the two preceding titles. There’s a new tag-team feature, which is interesting because tag team says to me players swapping in and out of encounters. Given Army of Two is built around two characters constantly being together, then can other players jump in?
EA also said it wants to improve a franchise it feels has a lot of potential, perhaps referring to the mixed reception over both titles. The always-on co-op concept is neat, so hopefully the game will deliver.
A release date, or platform, was not confirmed by EA or Visceral Games.
